PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences (SMDBS) is one of a small number of medical schools in the UK that continues to offer students the opportunity to study human anatomy by cadaveric dissection.
Anatomy has been taught in the MBC since 1968 and the existing accommodation comprises purpose built dissecting rooms (main and minor) with supporting display areas, preparation/storage rooms and seminar rooms on the first floor; histology lab, preparation room/storage area and a seminar room on the ground floor and an anatomy mortuary area in the basement.
Although ‘fit for purpose’ the current mortuary facilities, which have had little refurbishment or upgrade since 1968, were at the end of their useful life and in need of significant refurbishment. The refurbishment works included a full upgrade of the teaching facilities within the Main Dissection room.
The mortuary facility and the overall HSC will remained operational throughout the works, and managing health and safety and minimizing disruption was a major focus for the design and programming of these works.
